Overview

How gentle care may support speech development

For some children, chiropractic care combined with craniosacral therapy can play a supportive role in the care of developmental delays, including speech delays and speech impairments. In his Midtown Manhattan office, Dr. Alex Kaminsky offers this work as gentle, complementary care that sits alongside — never in place of — the guidance of your pediatrician and speech-language team.

The reasoning behind this approach centers on the relationship between the spine, the brain, and the nervous system as it develops. Proper development and function of the brain relies on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age. The healthy structural integrity of the spine and good joint movement matter, and the complex neurochemical communication and pathways involved in healthy development are tied into spinal biomechanics and their related neurological pathways.

The thinking, in plain language

  • Brain development relies on healthy structure and movement of the spine.
  • Spinal biomechanics are linked to the neurological pathways involved in communication.
  • Upper cervical alignment is connected to the brain-stem and the autonomic nervous system.
  • Care is light-touch, non-invasive, and tailored to each child.

Case report

An early-intervention case report

One published case report illustrates why early, gentle support is sometimes considered. It was authored by Andrew Dorough, D.C., titled "Early intervention: Improvement in motor developmental speech delay in a 2-year-old male following chiropractic care: a case report," and appeared in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics.

What the report described

The objective was to document the changes in a non-verbal 2-year-old male who was functioning without age-appropriate receptive language. At the start of his care he was unable to pronounce simple vowel sounds. The boy presented with apparent motor speech delay and was almost completely non-verbal — unable or unwilling to articulate simple vowel sounds, simple words, or word sounds. His expressive vocabulary consisted of 5–8 poorly pronounced words, and he mainly communicated by crying and bodily gestures. The child had not seen any other professional for this condition, nor received any treatment from another professional for it.

The care provided and the reported outcome

The child received cervical and cranial chiropractic care for 7 visits over 8 weeks, using digital vibration with the hands (Gonstead technique) and a Sigma-Instrument (instrument-assisted) technique, to address cervical vertebral and atlanto-occipital segmental dysfunction. Throughout care, the child showed steady progress in articulating vowel sounds, word sounds, and simple words, including pronunciation attempts upon reading words. Parents also reported, subjectively, that the child became more "affectionate" and "loving." The report associated this early course of care for cervical vertebral and atlanto-occipital correction with improvement in the child's presenting motor developmental speech delay.

Upper cervical focus

The atlas, axis, and brain-stem connection

This work focuses on the structural relationship of the atlas (C1), the axis (C2), and the brain-stem. This critical area is important to every function of a person's body, because the autonomic nervous system is controlled and regulated in the brain-stem.

If the top two bones in the neck have moved away from their biomechanical normalcy, this can interfere with normal function of the body, including speech development. The upper cervical complex is a unique joint complex that protects very sensitive parts of the nervous system — namely the brain stem and the spinal cord with its corresponding nerve roots.

How misalignment is described

Spinal misalignment can occur due to accidents and injuries, and these upper-neck misalignments affect the all-important nervous system. Dr. Kaminsky relates this to system dysfunction that can contribute to a variety of health concerns, including speech challenges. The thinking is that realignment of this joint complex can have far-reaching effects in improving speech, and that correcting this area with gentle chiropractic and craniosacral therapy for pediatrics is intended to have positive effects for speech.

Fluid flow and brain function

When a child has a misalignment in the upper neck, blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow may be disrupted, which can change the way the brain is functioning. A gentle upper cervical correction of this misalignment is intended to change the way the brain is working and restore proper mental function, allowing symptoms to improve naturally and supporting a child's ability to engage in speech. You can read more about how cerebrospinal fluid and the nervous system relate to this work on the how the body works page.

Care approach

Assessment and gentle treatment

A comprehensive facial, neck, head, and intra-oral examination by a trained chiropractor can help identify any cranial, spinal, or soft-tissue compromises so they can be addressed with gentle, appropriate care.

What an assessment can include

  • Evaluation of cranial motion and cervical alignment.
  • A facial, neck, head, and intra-oral examination.
  • Gentle chiropractic and craniosacral therapy methods suited to children.
  • Support intended to encourage cerebrospinal fluid flow and nervous-system balance.

Dr. Kaminsky commonly works with speech delays and impairments using a combination of chiropractic care and craniosacral therapy. He is glad to have a more in-depth conversation about whether these approaches may be a fit for you or your child.

Outcomes

Goals you can work toward

  • Greater speech engagement and confidence over time.
  • A calmer, better-regulated nervous system.
  • Improved functional communication, supported alongside other care.
See a physician for warning signs. A speech delay should always be evaluated by your pediatrician and, where appropriate, a speech-language pathologist. Seek prompt medical advice for red flags such as a loss of previously acquired skills, concerns about hearing, or other developmental warning signs. Craniosacral therapy is gentle, complementary care — results vary, it is never guaranteed, and it does not diagnose, cure, or replace medical treatment.
What to expect

Your child's visit, in three steps

  1. 1
    Conversation and assessment
A discussion of your child's history, current communication, and goals, followed by a gentle facial, neck, head, and intra-oral examination and an evaluation of cranial motion and cervical alignment.
  2. 2
    Gentle hands-on care
Light-touch craniosacral therapy and gentle chiropractic methods focused on the upper cervical region and cranial structures — quiet, slow, and comfortable for young children.
  3. 3
    Review and next steps
Dr. Kaminsky reviews how your child is responding and discusses a tailored plan. Because every child is different, the plan is adjusted to your child's individual needs and coordinated with your medical and speech-language care.
Common questions

Speech delay & craniosacral therapy: FAQs

Can craniosacral therapy help a child with a speech delay?

Craniosacral therapy and gentle chiropractic care are offered as complementary support for children with speech delay and speech impairment. The approach focuses on upper cervical alignment and cranial motion, which Dr. Kaminsky relates to nervous-system regulation. It is not a cure and does not replace speech-language therapy or medical care, and individual results vary.

What does Dr. Kaminsky look at during the assessment?

A comprehensive facial, neck, head, and intra-oral examination can help identify cranial, spinal, or soft-tissue compromises. Dr. Kaminsky also evaluates cranial motion and cervical alignment, with particular attention to the atlas (C1), axis (C2), and brain-stem region.

Is the care gentle enough for young children?

Yes. Sessions use light-touch craniosacral therapy and gentle chiropractic techniques tailored to each child. The work is non-invasive and there is no forceful cracking or manipulation.

Does this replace seeing a doctor or speech therapist?

No. Craniosacral therapy is complementary care. A speech delay should be evaluated by your pediatrician and, where appropriate, a speech-language pathologist. Seek prompt medical advice for any warning signs such as loss of previously acquired skills, hearing concerns, or other developmental red flags.

How many visits will my child need?

There is no set number. Every child responds differently based on their needs. Dr. Kaminsky discusses a tailored plan at the first visit and reviews progress along the way.

This page is for general education only and describes a gentle, complementary approach. It is not medical advice, does not diagnose or treat any condition, and does not guarantee results. Always consult your pediatrician and speech-language professional about your child's care.
