ADHD and Learning Support for Children in NYC
Your child is bright, but focus is hard. Homework ends in tears. Teachers say they're "not paying attention." You may already have an evaluation, an IEP, or a tutor. Now you want something that supports the whole child.
Dr. Alex Kaminsky, D.C., is a Certified Craniosacral Therapist and a licensed chiropractor since 2000. At his office in Murray Hill, he uses gentle craniosacral therapy and soft chiropractic care. He sees children with ADHD, ADD, and other attention issues.
This care does not replace school support or testing. It works alongside it.
How Craniosacral Therapy Fits In
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a hands-on method. It uses very light pressure on the head, neck, spine, and sacrum. The goal is to ease tension in the tissues around the brain and spinal cord. Sessions are quiet and calm. Most children stay fully clothed and relaxed on the table.
Dr. Kaminsky's view
In Dr. Kaminsky's view, attention issues often involve how the nervous system handles input. He pays special attention to the cerebellum. This part of the brain helps with coordination, timing, and sequencing. He believes tension in the skull and upper neck can add stress to that system. Sometimes that tension comes from a hard birth or an early fall.
His care aims to ease that tension so the nervous system can settle. This ties into his work on nervous system regulation. Goals might include better sleep, a calmer body, or an easier time sitting still. Every child responds differently, and results are not guaranteed.
What the research says
Research on CST for attention issues is limited. One small 2013 study in the Iranian Rehabilitation Journal followed 24 children with ADHD. Half had 15 CST sessions, twice a week, on top of occupational therapy. Parents in that group reported more improvement in attention and behavior. It was a small study, and results were based on parent ratings. More research is needed.
What parents share online is mixed too. Some describe calmer moods or better sleep after gentle hands-on care. Others notice little change, especially with focus. We think you should hear both sides before you decide.
ADHD and Attention Issues We Support
Dr. Kaminsky mostly sees children with ADHD and ADD. Signs can include trouble focusing, sitting still, or finishing tasks.
Some children also have a learning issue, like dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or sensory processing issues. Dr. Kaminsky looks at the whole child, not just one label.
What to Expect at Your Child's Visit
-
1History and goalsThe first visit starts with a conversation. Dr. Kaminsky asks about birth history, falls or head bumps, sleep, school, and any testing your child has had. Bring copies of evaluations or IEP notes if you have them. Here's more on what happens at a first visit.
-
2Gentle hands-on careNext comes light-touch CST. If it helps your child, he may add gentle chiropractic care. There is no cracking or twisting.
-
3A plan that fits your familyDr. Kaminsky will talk with you about what he found and how often to come in. Care fits around school, therapy, and tutoring schedules.
Working With Your School and Your Child's Team
In New York City, a learning disability is diagnosed through testing, not bodywork. ADHD is diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist. If you haven't had an evaluation, you can ask your child's school for one in writing. For public school students, the NYC Department of Education does the first evaluation for free. It must be done within 60 days after you sign consent. You can also get a private evaluation at any time.
Craniosacral therapy can sit beside that work. It can be part of a plan that also includes reading specialists, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or counseling.

Frequently asked questions
Can craniosacral therapy cure ADHD?
No. There is no cure for ADHD. CST aims to support a calmer, more settled nervous system. Some families notice changes in sleep, mood, or focus. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
Does my child need a diagnosis first?
No. You can come in before or after testing. If you have reports from a school or private evaluation, please bring them.
Is it safe for young children?
CST uses very light pressure, about the weight of a nickel. Dr. Kaminsky adjusts each session to your child's age and comfort.
How many visits will my child need?
It depends on the child. Dr. Kaminsky will suggest a plan after the first visit and check progress as you go.
Can you see my child after school?
Yes. Appointments run until 9 pm Monday through Thursday and until 6 pm on Friday. All visits are by appointment.
Should my child stop ADHD medication?
No. Never stop or change medication without talking to the doctor who prescribed it. CST is meant to work alongside your child's medical care.
Should we stop other therapies?
No. CST works alongside tutoring, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and school support. Keep your child's other care in place.
