Autism & Craniosacral Therapy in New York City

Whether it’s children, or adults with autism, relieving anxiety and stress is a top priority.  For those with autism when anxiety and stress are relieved, daily functions improve, often dramatically. A gentle non-invasive, drug free and reliable method that can often provide this relief for people with Autism is craniosacral therapy.

Craniosacral therapy, is a gentle, light-touch therapy that can produce profoundly positive effects upon brain and spinal cord function. Craniosacral therapy focuses on the body’s central nervous system (CNS) by way of the craniosacral system (skull and spinal bones, cerebrospinal fluid, and the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord). The benefit of craniosacral therapy is greater balance, mobility, and improved functioning of the CNS. As the “control center” of the body, the CNS influences every other major body system and function.

That’s why problems in the nervous system can cause a wide range of sensory, motor, or neurological disabilities. CST is very effective in treating an equally wide range of disabilities.

Craniosacral therapy helps the patient with a healthy, even pleasant flood of oxytocin.  Oxytocin is a hormone often associated with childbirth and breastfeeding, which occurs in the human body throughout the life cycle. The human body produces oxytocin whenever there is prolonged physical contact between people, typically skin-to-skin contact. For many reasons people with autism tend to produce far less oxytocin than the average person, leading to feelings of disconnectedness, isolation, and even depression or anxiety. The compassionate hands of a Craniosacral therapist on a person’s  body with the caring intention of lessening discomfort and improving one’s daily life can help kick-start oxytocin production, creating feelings of connection and increased well-being.

Nervous system imbalance is the key to why craniosacral therapy helps so many children with autism and ADHD. Almost all these kids are “ramped up”, and often unable to seem to relax. The part of the nervous system that allows us to respond in a “fight or flight” manner is in perpetual overdrive for these kids.

There are many neurological, genetic, and environmental factors that are thought to cause hyperactivity and nervous system dysfunction in children. But, there are also structural causes, particularly within the craniosacral system.

When cranial (skull) bones are misaligned, even slightly, restrictions can occur and remain fixed in the meninges or membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. These restrictions can interfere with the normal movement of fluids (blood and cerebrospinal fluid) that carry vital nutrients such as oxygen, anti-bodies, hormones, and electrochemical transmitters to the brain that flush toxins and inflammation out of the brain. The greater the restrictions the greater the nervous system dysfunction.

How do such restrictions arise? Many restrictions may occur at birth in difficult labor, forceps delivery, vacuum extraction, or breech. Or as children grow and experience falls or infections, surgeries, or trauma.

How does craniosacral therapy work?  The Craniosacral therapist first looks for irregularities in the craniosacral rhythm (much like the rhythm of a beating heart). Within a healthy craniosacral system, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is pumped normally at a rate of 6-12 cycles per minute. By detecting the rhythm, the therapist can determine where restrictions may be slowing or blocking the flow of CSF. Then, using the cranial and spinal joints / bones as handles of sorts, they gently smooth-out and help the body remove those restrictions from the membranes to help restore proper flow and function.

Once the restrictions are released and fluid motion restored brain function is naturally enhanced – and the body can be allowed to heal itself. Craniosacral therapy has had positive and even dramatic, outcomes for a wide range of children’s issues including: colic, digestive issues, feeding problems, sensory processing disorders, sleep problems, Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, behavioral problems, poor social skills and more.   The ever gentle, non-invasive and drug-free aspect of Craniosacral therapy makes it ideal healthcare for children of all ages, newborns through teens.

When the body’s systems are functioning at 100%, the potential for the body to do its job is really amazing. Craniosacral therapy balances and normalizes the nervous system. It elevates the body’s inherent ability to heal itself.

Craniosacral therapy alone may resolve many childhood developmental problems, but it is not a cure-all. Craniosacral therapy is often applied in conjunction with other approaches and behavioral therapies. However, rather than being the last line of defense or an adjunct therapy, Craniosacral therapy can prove beneficial as a first or early line of defense against many childhood disorders. The emotional and financial cost of searching for causes and remedies elsewhere without first looking at underlying structural causes can be great.

It is never too late to consider craniosacral therapy which helps people from birth on through a lifetime and the final chapter of their life. It has no side effects. It is not intrusive and the kids who undergo treatment are calmer. They sleep better. They are happier. They are much better able to enter situations of change and are socially more accepting. And once they experience the effects of craniosacral therapy they always look forward to it.

Dr. Alex Kaminsky

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a method focusing on the link between the cranium (head) and sacrum (the second to last bone at the base of your spine), scientifically proven to work in unison to pump fluid throughout the body, an unknown disruption of which can cause many health issues.  The craniosacral mechanism pumps vital fluid called cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) through the body and in a sense energetically lubricates the joints, tissues, organs; basically all cells of the body. It is the driving force of all your body’s systems of function; including maintaining the tone of your muscles.

The Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord) are surrounded with CSF generating energetic rhythmic impulses of fluid delicately pumping throughout your body’s parts “breathing” the movement of life. This measurable rhythm of moving fluid, like the heart rhythm, pulse rhythm, breathing rhythm is the foundational “blueprint” and primary principle of our real-time state of our health.

Compromises of our rhythmic movements of fluid flow correlates to the impulse restrictions in the system which the body is unable to overcome or self-correct. This is the reason why we have “dis-ease”, symptoms, conditions, basically all ailments.  This is where the skill of an experienced craniosacral therapist becomes valuable.  By placing his or her hands on your body the practitioner can feel, detect, evaluate, and facilitate correction of these restrictive arrhythmic impulses.

The craniosacral therapist helps your rhythm restore and renew in compromised areas allowing for healing to take place of sensory, motor, musculoskeletal, neurological disorders, symptoms, conditions and pain.  To learn more, visit the other pages on this website.
